I can't believe that "Pan's Labyrinth" didn't win for Best Foreign Film! I understand that "The Lives of Others" is supposed to be a really good movie, and all that (Oscar-worthy, one could argue), but really, Guillermo del Toro deserved to win. "Pan's Labyrinth" is such an amazing movie and here's hoping that the three Oscars it DID win will inspire more people to run out and see it.
Obviously, the big news is Martin Scorsese finally winning for Best Director. Of course, this was a long time coming and very well deserved. And, by well deserved, I mean based on his entire body of work because while, technically, he won for "The Departed," I haven't seen it. But I'm sure it's good and it's already on DVD, so I'll check it out soon.
Congrats to Al Gore and the producers of "An Inconvenient Truth." It's quite sad to say, but ever since not being chosen by the Supreme Court to become President, he's done everything to show us how presidential he would have been. And he's funny, too! Seriously, if he hadn't trapped his personality inside of a lockbox, the world could be a very different place. And, speaking of "An Inconvenient Truth," my wife pointed out that producer Davis Guggenheim is the spitting image of Muppet Don Music. See for yourself!
As for the rest of the awards, I am satisfied. It might have been nice to recognize Peter O'Toole, but Forest Whitaker was also a good choice. And Helen Mirren, Alan Arkin and Jennifer Hudson are all, to varying degrees, the right choice. Especially Helen Mirren!
Finally, I just want to say that the Director of the Oscars telecast is terrible. Not so much in the way the show was presented, which was fine, but just in the fact that there is NO REASON for a show to run that long! It's absurd! Are they so incompetent that they can't reasonably figure out how long the show will be before it starts? Do we need to see Chris Connolly forcing his way through a crowded room to tell us what we already know? The Shadow people were interesting, but could have been cut for time. Seriously, if this telecast is nominated for an Emmy, we should all protest!
