I guess all I can say it: Damn, Devin Hester can run. It's too bad that no opposing team in their right mind ever kicks the ball to him. The Colts figured that out the hard way*. And then they went on to out-play the Bears for the rest of the game. It really wasn't pretty.
But I learned one thing. You see, I'm not a huge sports guy, but I enjoy watching the Bears games. So, when I watched my team go 15-3 for the season (and post season), I was damn sure they were gonna win the Super Bowl. I laughed as all the media predicted a Colts win. How could they possibly say that? Oh sure, everyone talked about how great Manning is, but I was sure the Bears defense would shut 'em down like they had done to so many teams so many times before. And with the Colts offense out of the picture, the Bears would just run the ball in over and over. But, here's the thing. Because I never paid attention to the other teams - especially the AFC! - I really had no idea what they were up against. And they were up against a hell of a team.
With Grossman being inconsistent** - not awful, but inconsistent (and those fumbles were just painful!) - and Benson leaving the game, the Bears offense just couldn't pull it together. I lost track of the number of times the Bears offense allowed Colts to just swarm all over Rex. The Bears defense did a pretty good job of keeping the Colts out of the endzone but they were getting over worked and just couldn't keep them from marching down the field and into field goal range.
And so the Bears don't take the trophy. Oh well. We'll always have Prince. Damn, that guy can play!
UPDATE: Forgot one thing. Congrats to the Colts. It was a well earned victory. And congrats to the Bears for making it that far. So close!
Read part one of my yearly Bears reviews here.
* I still think its pretty cowardly to kick the ball short and low. Just kick it to him and deal with the consequences.
** Rex needs to take a few days off but I think that as of next week, he should be suited up and practicing snaps. Hell, they should turn a fire hose on him and make him practice snaps.
